Day trips from Sarasota
Sarasota sits in the sweet spot of Florida's Gulf Coast: close enough to the big cities and wild places that you can go, explore, and be back for dinner. These are the four day trips worth your time — an easy island beach day, the cheapest wildlife outing in the county, a big-city day in Tampa, and a history-plus-nature run south to Fort Myers.
Anna Maria Island (~40–60 minutes north)
An unhurried, old-Florida barrier island with six named beaches and almost no high-rises. Drive up via Longboat Key and Lido Key — the scenic route is half the trip. See our beach guide and beach comparison before you pick your spot.
- Coquina Beach — at the island's south end, shaded by Australian pines, with picnic tables, grills, and some of the best shelling on the island. Pack a cooler and make it your base.
- Manatee Beach & Bradenton Beach — the livelier stretches, with beachfront cafés and a more social scene than Siesta Key's calm.
- Ride the free trolley. It runs the length of the island, so park once and hop between beaches, shops, and dinner without moving the car (or paying for parking twice).
- Cortez Village — the historic fishing village on your way onto the island. Seafood markets and the pier end are worth a stop; pelican-watching at the pier is free.
- Check ahead: the boardwalk trails at Leffis Key Preserve have been closed for storm damage — verify the current status before planning around it.
Myakka River State Park (~25 minutes east)
The single best-value day trip on this list. One of Florida's oldest and largest state parks — 37,000 acres of prairie, hammock, and wetlands — for $6 per carload (up to 8 people; $4 for a single-occupant vehicle, $2 for cyclists). Open 8am to sunset, 365 days a year.
- Canopy Walkway & 74-foot Observation Tower — North America's first public canopy walkway, suspended 25 feet up through the treetops and ending at a 74-foot tower with a 360-degree view. Included with park admission.
- Alligators, for real. Upper Myakka Lake is estimated to hold around 1,000 gators — the boat tours give the best look, and winter dry season concentrates them near the remaining water. Swimming is not recommended anywhere in the park.
- Deep Hole permits — the hike to this alligator hotspot is limited to 30 walk-in permits per day (they stop issuing at 3pm), so ask at the ranger station early.
- Birding is world-class in fall through spring — crested caracaras, sandhill cranes, eagles.
- Money tip: this is a $6 day, not a $60 day. Bring food, water, and bug spray; the concession options are limited and you'll spend far less packing in.
Tampa (~60–75 minutes north)
About an hour up I-75 and over the Sunshine Skyway Bridge (toll — factor it in). Pick ONE anchor: Tampa is a big day, and trying to do everything means doing nothing well.
- Busch Gardens Tampa Bay — the 335-acre African-themed park of coasters and animal encounters. This is a full day on its own. Buy tickets online before you go — gate prices run higher than advance online prices.
- Tampa Riverwalk + Ybor City — the cheaper anchor. The Riverwalk is a free scenic path along the Hillsborough River connecting parks, museums, and restaurants; then head to Ybor City, the historic cigar district, where wandering, window-shopping, and a Cuban sandwich cost very little.
- The Florida Aquarium (Channelside) — plan 1.5–2 hours for the circular route through wetlands, coral reefs, sharks, and penguins. Ticket prices are dynamic and sell out on busy days, so book online in advance and check the official site for current rates.
- Money tip: downtown Tampa garages are cheaper than Busch Gardens parking — and the Riverwalk day needs no attraction ticket at all.

Fort Myers (~90 minutes south)
Straight down I-75. History in the morning, free nature in the afternoon.
- Edison & Ford Winter Estates (2350 McGregor Blvd.) — Thomas Edison's and Henry Ford's winter homes, plus the lab and a 15,000-square-foot museum, across 21 acres of gardens. Adult self-guided tickets run roughly $25–$28; check the official site for current pricing. Open 9am–5:30pm daily except Thanksgiving and Christmas — in December, Holiday Nights stays open to 9pm.
- Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve — a ~1.5-mile boardwalk through cypress slough with gators, otters, woodpeckers, and owls. Entry is free; parking is $1/hour or $5 for the day. Winter guided walks run daily in season.
- Money tip: the estates are the splurge, the slough is the saver — pair them and you get a full, varied day for one ticket price.
Money-saving tips for day trips
- Fill up and pack food in Sarasota. Gas and groceries are cheaper than anything near a theme park or beach café. A cooler is the highest-ROI travel accessory in Florida.
- Buy attraction tickets online, in advance. Busch Gardens and the Florida Aquarium both price dynamically — gate prices are higher, and popular days sell out.
- Park once. Anna Maria Island's free trolley and downtown Tampa's walkability both reward leaving the car in one spot.
- Check the official site before you drive. Park hours, permit limits (Myakka's Deep Hole), and preserve closures (Leffis Key) all shift — a two-minute check beats a wasted drive.
- Stack your discounts. Our coupons page tracks tour and attraction deals as we find them, and our free things to do list builds great half-days around every one of these trips.
