Rainy day in Sarasota
Florida rain usually blows through in an hour โ but when it settles in, Sarasota has some of the best indoor backup plans on the Gulf Coast. Here's how to salvage the day without salvaging your budget.
Museums worth the ticket
- The Ringling Museum of Art โ a serious art collection (Rubens, Velรกzquez) in a pink Venetian palazzo. The whole complex can fill a full rainy day; the Circus Museum next door is the crowd-pleaser for kids. Check The Ringling's official site for current hours and admission.
- The Circus Museum โ historic wagons, costumes, and a miniature circus. Genuinely fun for adults too, not just a kids' stop.
- Sarasota Art Museum โ contemporary art in the beautifully restored historic Sarasota High School building downtown. Smaller and quicker than The Ringling โ a good half-day.
Mote Marine Aquarium
Mote's aquarium on City Island is mostly indoors โ touch tanks, sharks, manatees, and sea turtles. It's the default rainy-day answer for families for a reason. Verify hours and ticket prices on Mote's official site before you go.

More indoor backup plans
- Selby Gardens' conservatory โ the Downtown Sarasota campus has indoor tropical displays; a rainy visit means smaller crowds on the covered walkways. (In December, come back after dark for Lights in Bloom.)
- Catch a show. The Van Wezel and the city's theaters run year-round โ a matinee is a classic rain-day move. Check our events page for what's on.
- Bowling, arcades, and movie theaters โ the unglamorous classics. Fine for an afternoon; check our coupons hub for any entertainment deals first.
- St. Armands Circle โ mostly an outdoor stroll, but the shops and restaurants make a decent browse-and-lunch loop between showers.
Rainy-day money tips
- Wait it out first. Summer storms often clear by mid-afternoon โ don't burn a museum ticket on a shower that ends at 2pm.
- Check for combo value. Some attractions bundle multiple venues; compare the all-in ticket against doing just one.
- Verify hours. Museums and aquariums shift hours seasonally and close some holidays โ a quick check on the official site beats a wasted drive.
